Big data meets sports

Big data meets sports

Yesterday JOHAN Sports presented at the meetup about “Big data meets sports” in Den Bosch. Several interesting speakers were there to inform the audience about the latest developments within the sports & technology industry. SciSports (Giels Brouwer, CEO), Talpa Network (Hylke Sprangers, CTO) en BBO.life (Marcel van der Kuil) were also present.

Our Head of Sport Science (Niels van der Linden) was there to talk about how JOHAN helps sport teams to achieve higher performances on the field using GPS data, RPE data and Real-Time data. JOHAN collects all the data and converts it into a simple sport science advice for the coach. Therefore coaches can optimize their periodisation/training schedule.

The mission of JOHAN is to bring a high performance culture to all levels of sport, which consists of three key aspects: RPE data, GPS data and Real-Time data.

RPE data
The term RPE data stands for Rated Perceived Exertion and gives information about the internal load of each player. How do players feel after an intense training? Do they feel muscle soreness, are they stressed or do they have little injuries. This information can be gathered with the JOHAN mobile app. Players can fill in the exertion forms and recovery forms directly on their mobile phone, so coaches get quick insights in how players respond on different training sessions or matches. The RPE data can be used to adjust/customize the next training session(s).

GPS data
With the JOHAN GPS trackers it’s possible to measure the actual performances of the players on the field. It’s showing you direct insights in how many sprints, accelerations, decelerations, speed, distances etcetera each player has deliverd during training sessions or matches. With this information JOHAN creates an individual player profile so coaches/trainers can see wich player(s) need more (or less) attention.

Real-Time data
Having real-time data during training sessions or matches can help coaches to make better decisions about injury prevention and performances. An intuitive dashboard with automated alerts to protect players against injuries or push them to improve their fitness to the next level. This information can especially be used during matches to substitute exhausted players.

BBO.life
Marcel van der Kuil presented the opportunities and challenges that comes with data. The misinterpretation is that gathering a lot of data improves the decision making proces. On the contrary: gathering more data causes more problems. Together with JOHAN Sports, BBO.life offers a solution by combining sport science and data science to answer the practical questions of coaches.
